TithiThe lunar day. It runs from one step of the Moon's phase to the next, so it rarely begins at sunrise. Fasts and festivals are fixed by it.
Krishna EkadashiThe eleventh tithi of each half, so it comes twice a lunar month. This is the fasting day most vrats are kept on, and grain is left out.
NakshatraThe star the Moon is passing through. There are twenty-seven, and yours decides your naming letter and much of a matching score.
PunarvasuThe seventh nakshatra, ruled by Guru with Aditi as its deity. The light that comes back after dark: safe, generous, and always able to begin again.
YogaSun and Moon taken together, in twenty-seven named combinations. A few are avoided for starting new work and the rest pass unremarked.
VyatipataThe seventeenth yoga, the one almanacs warn about most. New work stops, and the day is turned to charity and to remembering the dead.
KaranaHalf of a tithi. Sixty karanas cover the lunar month, and the one running at sunrise flavours the day's work.
BavaThe first of the seven repeating karanas, and an auspicious one. Beginnings that should grow, a journey or a new job, are placed in it.
