Bhakoot is 7 of the 36 points and, like Nadi, all-or-nothing. It looks only at the axis the two Moon rashis form, and exactly three of the seven possible axes carry the dosha.

What it is
Bhakoot, in one paragraph
Take the two Moon rashis and count from each to the other, inclusively. Whatever the signs, that always lands on one of seven axes: 1/1, 2/12, 3/11, 4/10, 5/9, 6/8 or 7/7. Three of those seven carry Bhakoot dosha and score zero; the other four take the full 7.
The three are 2/12, read as a drain of resources between the two houses; 5/9, read as strain around children and fortune; and 6/8, the shadashtaka, read as friction and as a matter of health. Nothing else about either chart enters the calculation — not the lagna, not the nakshatra, only the two rashis.
Because 7 points is nearly a fifth of the total, Bhakoot alone can take a match from a comfortable 25 to an uncomfortable 18. That drop is arithmetic, not a finding about the couple, and it is worth knowing which of the two it is before anyone reacts to the number.

The part that matters
What classical practice treats as cancelling it
Bhakoot has fewer recognised exceptions than Nadi, but the main one is common enough that it is worth checking before anybody treats the zero as final.
The two rashis share a lord
Where both Moon rashis are ruled by the same graha — Mesha and Vrischika under Mars, Vrishabha and Tula under Venus, and so on — the standard texts set the dosha aside.
The rashi lords are natural friends
Where the two lords are friends in the natural friendship table rather than enemies, many traditions treat the axis as neutralised.
Graha Maitri already scored full
Graha Maitri is the koota that measures exactly that friendship, and it is scored separately in the same 36. A pair taking full Graha Maitri while losing Bhakoot is the classic case for setting the Bhakoot zero aside, because the two are measuring the same relationship and disagreeing.

What it is not
Three things Bhakoot dosha does not mean
- It is not a statement about health or about children. Those are the classical glosses on two of the three axes, and a gloss on a rashi count is not a prognosis about a person.
- It is not independent of the rest of the score. When Graha Maitri comes out full and Bhakoot comes out zero, the two kootas are contradicting each other about the same relationship.
- It is not the reason to stop. It is 7 points in an arithmetic that never looks at the seventh house, which is the house the whole question is actually about.
