Abhijit Muhurat
What Abhijit muhurat actually is
Sunrise to sunset is divided into fifteen equal muhurtas. On a twelve-hour day each is 48 minutes; in June in Delhi it is closer to 56, in December closer to 41. Abhijit is the eighth of the fifteen, which puts it exactly in the middle of the day, from one thirtieth of the daylight before local noon to one thirtieth after it.
The name means "victorious", and the reputation follows from the position. At noon the Sun is at its highest and the day is held to be at its strongest, so the window is said to override most minor blemishes of the tithiThe lunar day. It runs from one step of the Moon's phase to the next, so it rarely begins at sunrise. Fasts and festivals are fixed by it. or the nakshatraThe star the Moon is passing through. There are twenty-seven, and yours decides your naming letter and much of a matching score.. It does not override Rahu KaalAbout ninety minutes each day in which nothing new is started: no travel, no purchase, no signing. Work already under way is fine to continue., and on a day where the two overlap the printed panchangsThe day's five limbs read together: vara, tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Everything an almanac says about a date starts here. side with Rahu Kaal.
Its usual uses are the everyday ones: leaving on a journey, making a purchase, opening a shop or a bank account, sending an application, beginning a course. It is not the window for a wedding or a griha pravesh, which have their own reckonings and are placed by a lagnaThe sign rising in the east at your birth, and the first house of the chart. It changes about every two hours, which is why the birth time matters. rather than by the hour.

| Monday | 9th muhurta |

What it is not
What it is not
- It is not 12:00 to 12:48. That is the figure a national table prints and it is right for one meridian on two days of the year. Everywhere else it is the midpoint of that place’s own sunrise and sunset.
- It is not a licence to ignore Rahu Kaal. Where the two overlap, and on a Sunday afternoon in some cities they nearly do, Rahu Kaal wins.
- It is not observed on a Wednesday. The engine still computes the window that day, and the page still says so, but it is not listed as auspicious and Vijaya is offered in its place.
