Brahma Muhurta

Brahma muhurta today — the 48 minutes before dawn

The window that opens the day: from 96 minutes before sunrise to 48 minutes before it. Traditionally the best time to study, meditate or do japa, because nothing else is awake to interrupt it.

· Guruvara · Dehradun

Computed from Dehradun's own sunrise, so it moves with the season and with where you are. A single national figure would be wrong everywhere except one meridian.

Brahma Muhurta

What Brahma muhurta actually is

The night is divided into fifteen muhurtas of about 48 minutes each. Brahma Muhurta is the fourteenth of them, the second-last before sunrise. Counted for a twelve-hour night puts it 96 to 48 minutes ahead of dawn, which is the figure printed panchangs use and the one computed here.

The name is Brahma in the sense of knowledge rather than the deity: it is the hour set aside for study and recitation. The practical claim behind it is unremarkable. The world is quiet, the body has finished its sleep cycle, and the mind has not yet been handed a day’s worth of noise.

There is a second, proportional reckoning in which each muhurta is a fifteenth of the actual night, so the window shrinks in summer and stretches in winter. Both are defensible. This page uses the fixed-minute form because it is what the almanacs people compare against print.

What it is not

What it is not

  • It is not a deadline. Nothing is spoiled by waking after it; the tradition recommends a window, it does not impose a penalty.
  • It is not a substitute for sleep. Waking at 4am having gone to bed at 1am is not the practice being described, and the texts that recommend the hour also assume an early night.

Questions

Questions

What time is Brahma muhurta today?

It depends on your city’s sunrise, which is why the time above is computed for a specific place rather than quoted as a single national figure. Pick your city from the list below and the window is recomputed from that city’s sunrise.

How long is Brahma muhurta?

48 minutes, which is one muhurta. It ends 48 minutes before sunrise, so the whole window sits inside the last stretch of night.

Is it the same time every day?

No. It is pinned to sunrise, and sunrise moves through the year. The week table above shows how much it drifts where you are.
