Godhuli Bela

Godhuli bela today — the cow-dust hour at sunset

Twelve minutes before sunset to twelve minutes after: one ghati, centred on the moment the sun goes down. Classically a muhurta that stands on its own, which is why weddings and griha pravesh are put in it when nothing else lines up.

· Guruvara · Chandigarh

Computed from Chandigarh's own sunset. The window moves with longitude and season exactly as Rahu Kaal does, so a single national godhuli time would be wrong nearly everywhere.

Twelve minutes either side of sunset. Auspicious in its own right, for marriage and griha pravesh.

Godhuli Bela

What godhuli bela actually is

Go means cow and dhuli means dust: the hour when cattle come back from grazing and raise dust on the way home. It is one of the few time-names in the tradition that describes a sight rather than a calculation.

Muhurta Ganapati fixes it at half a ghati either side of sunset, which is twelve minutes before and twelve after, twenty-four in total. It is symmetric about sunset, and that is the part most often got wrong: running the window forwards from sunset drops the half the name is about, because the dust rises while the sun is still just up.

It is called swayamsiddha, meaning self-established. The claim is that the window does not need the tithi, the lagna or the nakshatra to agree with it, which is why a family with no clean muhurat in a whole month can still be married at dusk.

What it is not

What it is not

  • It is not a licence to ignore the rest of the chart. "Stands on its own" is a statement about timing, not a claim that any wedding at sunset will go well.
  • It is not twenty-four minutes after sunset. That is the commonest version printed online and it is half right. The window straddles sunset rather than following it.

Questions

Questions

What time is godhuli bela today?

Twelve minutes either side of your city’s sunset. The exact window is above, and every other city is one tap away below.

How long is godhuli muhurat?

24 minutes, which is one ghati. Twelve before sunset and twelve after.

Is godhuli bela good for marriage?

It is one of the windows traditionally used for exactly that, and its reputation comes from being held to stand without support from the other reckonings. That is a statement about the tradition, not a prediction about a marriage.
