Panchang at a glance

VaraThe weekday, and the first limb of the panchang. Each day answers to one graha, which is why Tuesday is read differently from Friday.
SomavaraMonday, the Moon's day, and Shiva's. The Mondays of Shravana are the best known fast in the whole year.Favourable
TithiThe lunar day. It runs from one step of the Moon's phase to the next, so it rarely begins at sunrise. Fasts and festivals are fixed by it.
Krishna EkadashiThe eleventh tithi of each half, so it comes twice a lunar month. This is the fasting day most vrats are kept on, and grain is left out.Favourableuntil , then Krishna Dwadashi

NakshatraThe star the Moon is passing through. There are twenty-seven, and yours decides your naming letter and much of a matching score.
PunarvasuThe seventh nakshatra, ruled by Guru with Aditi as its deity. The light that comes back after dark: safe, generous, and always able to begin again.Favourableuntil , then Pushya
YogaSun and Moon taken together, in twenty-seven named combinations. A few are avoided for starting new work and the rest pass unremarked.
VyatipataThe seventeenth yoga, the one almanacs warn about most. New work stops, and the day is turned to charity and to remembering the dead.Avoideduntil , then Variyana
KaranaHalf of a tithi. Sixty karanas cover the lunar month, and the one running at sunrise flavours the day's work.
BalavaThe second repeating karana. Counted good for study, for puja, and for work of a priestly or scholarly kind.Favourableuntil , then Kaulava

Full timings of tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana

Tithi

  • Krishna EkadashiThe eleventh tithi of each half, so it comes twice a lunar month. This is the fasting day most vrats are kept on, and grain is left out.Favourable

    to

A Nanda (joyful) tithi, counted among the days good for beginnings.

  • Krishna DwadashiThe twelfth tithi, and the day an Ekadashi fast is broken. Getting the hour of that paran right is one reason tithi timings are printed at all.Favourable

    to

A Bhadra (gracious) tithi, well spoken of for new work.

The lunar day. Fasts, festivals and most vrats are fixed by this.

Nakshatra

  • PunarvasuThe seventh nakshatra, ruled by Guru with Aditi as its deity. The light that comes back after dark: safe, generous, and always able to begin again.Favourable

    to

A Chara (movable) star, suited to travel, vehicles and anything that sets out.

  • PushyaThe eighth nakshatra, ruled by Shani with Brihaspati as its deity. The most nourishing of the twenty-seven: steady, dutiful and protective of what it holds.Favourable

    to

A Kshipra (swift) star, good for work meant to be finished quickly.

The star the Moon is passing through. Used for naming and matching.

Yoga

  • VyatipataThe seventeenth yoga, the one almanacs warn about most. New work stops, and the day is turned to charity and to remembering the dead.Avoided

    to

Vyatipata, one of the two yogas every school sets aside for auspicious work.

  • VariyanaThe eighteenth yoga, easy and comfortable. Good for rest, for hospitality, and for work that should not be rushed.Neutral

    to

Not one of the two yogas tradition sets aside, so no objection on this count.

  • ParighaThe nineteenth yoga, and its name is a barred gate. Obstruction is expected in the first half especially, so beginnings wait it out.Neutral

    to

Not one of the two yogas tradition sets aside, so no objection on this count.

Sun and Moon taken together. Some are avoided for new work.

Karana

  • BalavaThe second repeating karana. Counted good for study, for puja, and for work of a priestly or scholarly kind.Favourable

    to

One of the seven movable karanas, with no general objection to it.

  • KaulavaThe third repeating karana, the friendly one. Good for marriage talks, for agreements, and for anything that joins two sides.Favourable

    to

One of the seven movable karanas, with no general objection to it.

  • TaitilaThe fourth repeating karana. Traditionally taken for trade, and for approaching people who hold authority over you.Favourable

    to

One of the seven movable karanas, with no general objection to it.

Half a tithi. Two of them run in every lunar day.

The word beside each limb is what tradition makes of it for STARTING something, and the line under it names the classical rule it comes from. Nothing here is a warning about the day itself: an avoided tithi is a custom to respect, not an emergency, and most months carry several. For a date matched to a particular event, these five are only the first thing an astrologer would look at.

How this page is worked out
  • Sunrise and sunset are computed for Surat with the disc-centre-with-refraction convention Indian panchangs use.
  • Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
  • Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika and the choghadiya are eighths of the real sunrise-to-sunset interval here, not of a nominal twelve-hour day.
  • Disha Shool is the classical weekday table, so it is the same in every city.
  • All times are Indian Standard Time.
