Modern Panditji

Festival

Diwali dates

Computed year by year from the Moon and the Sun. Each row shows the tithi the festival sits on and the lunar month in both the amanta and purnimanta reckonings, because the two name the same month differently during krishna paksha.

Also called: Deepavali, Lakshmi Puja, Badi Diwali

Amavasya, Ashwina

Festival

The rule

What the date is derived from, stated so you can check it.

The amavasya that closes amanta Ashwina, which every north Indian almanac names Kartika Amavasya. Lakshmi Puja is a pradosh rite, so the evening rather than the sunrise names the day, and that is the whole reason Diwali is sometimes reported on two different dates.

The day is settled by the tithi at pradosh, just after sunset.
