Shravana Nakshatraश्रवण

Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20′. A pada is one navamsa, so the Moon’s pada refines the reading — it is what a chart uses to place you within Shravana.

Shravana means "hearing", and its symbol is the ear; its deity is Vishnu, the preserver who spans the worlds in three steps. This is the nakshatra of listening, learning and transmission — of taking in knowledge attentively and passing it on. The Moon rules it, giving a receptive, sensitive, connective mind. People with the Moon in Shravana are good listeners in the deepest sense: they hear what is said and what is meant, gather information and stories, and become the ones others come to for counsel. The sensitivity to what is heard can become over-concern with reputation, gossip and others’ opinions. Shravana can be too influenced by what people say, anxious about its image, and prone to passivity — listening and advising rather than acting. It can cling to tradition past its use, and lose its own voice in the chorus of others’. The work is to listen without being ruled by opinion — to keep its own counsel, to act on what it learns, and to hold reputation lightly.

Tradition associates Shravana with work of knowledge and connection: teaching and scholarship, counselling and therapy, media and communication, music, any field that gathers and transmits understanding. These people do well where listening and learning are central, and where being trusted with what people say is the whole job. In relationships they are attentive, devoted and supportive, and the growth edge is self-direction — trusting their own judgement over the chorus of what others think.
