Every timing here is measured from this city’s sunrise, so pick the city you are actually in.
Panchang at a glance
- VaraThe weekday, and the first limb of the panchang. Each day answers to one graha, which is why Tuesday is read differently from Friday.
- GuruvaraThursday, Jupiter's day. The strongest weekday for a wedding, for teaching, and for anything begun with a blessing.Favourable
- TithiThe lunar day. It runs from one step of the Moon's phase to the next, so it rarely begins at sunrise. Fasts and festivals are fixed by it.
- Shukla EkadashiThe eleventh tithi of each half, so it comes twice a lunar month. This is the fasting day most vrats are kept on, and grain is left out.Favourableuntil , then Shukla Dwadashi
- Paksha
- Shuklawaxing
- NakshatraThe star the Moon is passing through. There are twenty-seven, and yours decides your naming letter and much of a matching score.
- ShatabhishaThe twenty-fourth nakshatra, ruled by Rahu with Varuna as its deity. The hundred healers: secretive, independent and unconventional, mending what stays hidden.Favourableuntil , then Purva Bhadrapada
- YogaSun and Moon taken together, in twenty-seven named combinations. A few are avoided for starting new work and the rest pass unremarked.
- VriddhiThe eleventh yoga, and its name is growth. Whatever you want to increase, savings or a business or a practice, is started under it.Neutraluntil , then Dhruva
- KaranaHalf of a tithi. Sixty karanas cover the lunar month, and the one running at sunrise flavours the day's work.
- VishtiThe seventh repeating karana, better known as Bhadra. This is the one karana new work waits out, though a journey already begun carries on.Avoideduntil , then Bava

Full timings of tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana
Tithi
Shukla EkadashiThe eleventh tithi of each half, so it comes twice a lunar month. This is the fasting day most vrats are kept on, and grain is left out.Favourable
to
A Nanda (joyful) tithi, counted among the days good for beginnings.
Shukla DwadashiThe twelfth tithi, and the day an Ekadashi fast is broken. Getting the hour of that paran right is one reason tithi timings are printed at all.Favourable
to
A Bhadra (gracious) tithi, well spoken of for new work.
The lunar day. Fasts, festivals and most vrats are fixed by this.
Nakshatra
ShatabhishaThe twenty-fourth nakshatra, ruled by Rahu with Varuna as its deity. The hundred healers: secretive, independent and unconventional, mending what stays hidden.Favourable
to
A Chara (movable) star, suited to travel, vehicles and anything that sets out.
Purva BhadrapadaThe twenty-fifth nakshatra, ruled by Guru with the one-footed Aja Ekapada presiding. The fiery idealist: intense, unconventional, and burning for a cause.Avoided
to
An Ugra (fierce) star, set aside for auspicious beginnings.
The star the Moon is passing through. Used for naming and matching.
Yoga
VriddhiThe eleventh yoga, and its name is growth. Whatever you want to increase, savings or a business or a practice, is started under it.Neutral
to
Not one of the two yogas tradition sets aside, so no objection on this count.
DhruvaThe twelfth yoga, the fixed one. Foundations, planting and anything meant to stay exactly where it is are placed in it.Neutral
to
Not one of the two yogas tradition sets aside, so no objection on this count.
Sun and Moon taken together. Some are avoided for new work.
Karana
VishtiThe seventh repeating karana, better known as Bhadra. This is the one karana new work waits out, though a journey already begun carries on.Avoided
to
Vishti, also called Bhadra. Classical texts pause new undertakings while it runs.
BavaThe first of the seven repeating karanas, and an auspicious one. Beginnings that should grow, a journey or a new job, are placed in it.Favourable
to
One of the seven movable karanas, with no general objection to it.
BalavaThe second repeating karana. Counted good for study, for puja, and for work of a priestly or scholarly kind.Favourable
to
One of the seven movable karanas, with no general objection to it.
Half a tithi. Two of them run in every lunar day.
The word beside each limb is what tradition makes of it for STARTING something, and the line under it names the classical rule it comes from. Nothing here is a warning about the day itself: an avoided tithi is a custom to respect, not an emergency, and most months carry several. For a date matched to a particular event, these five are only the first thing an astrologer would look at.

How this page is worked out
- Sunrise and sunset are computed for Raipur with the disc-centre-with-refraction convention Indian panchangs use.
- Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are sidereal, with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika and the choghadiya are eighths of the real sunrise-to-sunset interval here, not of a nominal twelve-hour day.
- Disha Shool is the classical weekday table, so it is the same in every city.
- All times are Indian Standard Time.
