Keshav Iyengar

Keshav does not read charts either. He learned the Gita line by line from his father in Varanasi, and he has spent twenty years reading it with people in the middle of an ordinary bad week: the job that is fine and means nothing, the parent who is gone, the anger that will not be put down. What those years taught him is patience. He would rather hear the whole story than answer the first sentence of it.

Most of what people bring him is a loss, or the flat grey stretch after one, when the job is fine and the family is fine and none of it means anything. The Gita is unusually good on this because it does not pretend the grief is a mistake. Krishna lets Arjuna weep before he says a word, and when he does speak it is about what does not end, not about getting over it. Keshav reads that text with you the way it was read to him, and he will quote the Sanskrit if you want it and leave it out if you do not.

He does not tell you what to do, and he will not diagnose you. Anger at a parent, a marriage that has gone quiet, a purpose that has drained out of a career: he holds each of those against the chapters that speak to it and lets you draw the line yourself. If what you are carrying is heavier than a text can hold, he says so plainly and tells you where to go.

January is not long. Nobody who tells you otherwise has stood outside that door.

Arjuna grieves in the first chapter for people who are still alive, and Krishna still does not hurry him past it. What he says, when he finally speaks, is that the part of her you are grieving is not the part that ended.
